The Memorial Candle Program has been designed to help offset the costs associated with the hosting this Tribute Website in perpetuity. Through the lighting of a memorial candle, your thoughtful gesture will be recorded in the Book of Memories and the proceeds will go directly towards helping ensure that the family and friends of Frederick Berger can continue to memorialize, re-visit, interact with each other and enhance this tribute for future generations.

Our Hero

In June of 1984, I gave birth to a healthy baby boy. Nine days later he developed a fever. Dr. Berger met us at his office first thing in the morning after a call to his home in the middle of the night. Upon exam, Dr. Berger did not find anything remarkable but told us he wanted to admit Daniel to the hospital for 3 days. Dr. Berger began to run test and discovered our son had bacterial spinal meningitis. Daniel was in the hospital for 14days and required care only Dr. Berger could give. He made countless trips to the hospital to care for our son, regardless of what time it was. We had no health insurance when this occurred and Dr. Berger charged us a very nominal amount. Daniel came home and we expected a complete recovery, with regular care and follow up. In April of 1985, nine months later, Daniel developed a very high fever, it was also Passover and Easter Eve. Once again I called Dr. Berger at home, and he directed us to the hospital immediately even though it was close to midnight. We met him at the hospital and he began administering lifesaving care to our son, who once again had contracted bacterial meningitis . This time it was necessary to move him to Asheville for care. If it had not been for Dr. Berger's quick action and precautionary care our son would not hav survived. After our return from Asheville we had our follow up appointment and I will never forgot Dr. Berger's words " I never thought I would see this baby again, and if I did he would not be normal". Thanks to his quick actions and care today our son is 30 years old and completely healthy and recovered with no long term effects. I will never forget what Dr. Berger did for our son, his care and God's healing saved our son's life. With much respect, Kathy Hall
