As nurse manager, I was blessed to have the opportunity to work with Dr. Fred Berger for four years at the local Job Corps. We had a shared kindness and patience needed to work with vulnerable youth. I will always recall the week we had all male students (8-9 of them) arrive for their physicals. I gave them their instructions about the process: Vitals, urine drug screen, go in exam room and strip to boxers or briefs for physicals. I stepped into another room and returned to find all of them running up and down the halls in their skivvies. My drug and alcohol counselor had a fit. I turned red. Dr. Berger walked in and with a little grin said, "Well, I see we're ready".
I will alway remember Dr. Berger for his quiet and gentle sense of humor, his loving kindness and compassion for all, his passion to serve his community, and most of all, his deep love of his family. I will remember how he would talk about his progress in building a play area for Benjamin. He couldn't wait for Benjamin (Ben) to come to see it..I will always remember how lovingly he spoke of his children and how proud he was of all of them. I remember how he could barely contain his excitement with the birth of each new grand child. And when Fred and Lee were preparing to travel to see them, he would be in and out of the Health Center to adjust and tighten anything that was in the back of the truck for the trip. He never wanted to waste a single moment that would delay his travels to see his family.
This man was truly one of those very rare people who is placed on this earth as a gift to all those who are fortunate or chosen to meet him. I believe that when it rains, those are tears of angels crying when people come together to grieve the passing of their loved ones. Today, we had torrents of rain on and off throughout the day. Could there be any doubt as to why.
My life is better because I knew this man. I thank him and his family for that.
May the Berger family carry forward the beautiful qualities that your brother, grandfather, father ,husband displayed for all who knew him.
God bless you all.
