Bernece Elizabeth Houston Evitt Shope, 81, passed on Sunday, November 8, 2015, at the CarePartners Solace Center.

Mrs. Shope was born in Macon County and was a daughter of the late Sam and Rachel Houston and was also preceded in death by her husband, Leland C. Evitt, and by siblings, Ella Mae McClure, Betty McClure, Sammy Houston, Bud Houston and Ray Houston. She was a dedicated member of Trinity Baptist Church where she volunteered in the kitchen and with Hearts with Hands.

Surviving are her husband, David Shope; daughters, Karen Knowlton (Chuck) and Kim Tate (Ken); sons, Derek Evitt (Julie), Thad Evitt (Pamela) and Kraig Evitt (Crystal); 12 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; sisters, Faye Sands, Laverne Hooper and Wanda Houston; and brothers, Steve Houston and Clinton Houston.

The family will receive friends from 10:30 am - 12:00 pm Wednesday in the chapel of Trinity Baptist Church in Asheville, 216 Shelburne Rd. The funeral service will follow immediately in the chapel. The Rev. Davis Plemmons will officiate with graveside services at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday at Woodlawn Cemetery, Franklin.

The family expresses their sincere appreciation to the staffs of Arbor Terrace, Pisgah Manor, and CarePartners Hospice for the devoted and loving care they provided to our mother.

Memorials may be made to CarePartners Hospice, PO Box 25338, Asheville, NC 28813, or to Meals on Wheels at Hominy Baptist Church, 135 Candler School Road, Candler, NC 28715.
