The Memorial Candle Program has been designed to help offset the costs associated with the hosting this Tribute Website in perpetuity. Through the lighting of a memorial candle, your thoughtful gesture will be recorded in the Book of Memories and the proceeds will go directly towards helping ensure that the family and friends of Frances Winstead can continue to memorialize, re-visit, interact with each other and enhance this tribute for future generations.

Condolence From: Robert Vinson
Condolence: I am sorry to hear of the passing of Miss Winstead. I owe my college career to her. She found a college in Western NC that offered scholarships to students such as me. She not only encouraged me, but also drove me over to visit the college, where I was accepted. I am now retired from 42 years in education, all because she saw possibility and encouraged me. She will be missed.

Condolence: Miss Winstead leaves behind quite a legacy!

Along with many, many others, I was a member of her social studies classes. But I remember her best for the few times I saw her in her later years.

There was the time that she came up to me and said, "The Lord just told me to ask you to be in prayer for..." and she continued with her prayer request.

There were times when she spoke of giving, occasionally reluctantly, but all because the Lord led her to do so.

She struggled with arthritic hands, but continued to write slowly and deliberately.

She talked of her beautiful mother, who was always immaculately dressed even for breakfast. That's the image she sought for herself, although she didn't think she quite measured up! Nevertheless, I never saw her when she wasn't dressed to the nines and perfectly groomed.

Miss Winstead strove for the best - for her students as well as for herself - and will long be remembered for her contributions to education and especially to the students whose lives she touched.
