Obituary for George B Gover

George B Gover
George B. Gover, 77, of Otto, NC, passed away Tuesday, May 10, 2016, in Rockledge, Fla.

Born in Cambridge, Vt. on June 22, 1938, to Alanson and Muriel Gover, George had one brother, Elmer.
Before retiring to Otto, N.C. in 2003, George had a long career in the food industry. He worked for Howard Johnson’s for 23 years and spent the last 15 years of his career with Marriott/Sodexo. He managed the food service plazas on the Indiana toll road as well as on the Florida Turnpike and finished his career overseeing food service for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the University of South Carolina at Columbia. He enjoyed his time on campus and recalled students taking cafeteria trays for sledding and, instead of reprimanding them, asked that they simply return the trays when they were done.
George’s faith was strong, and he was a member and active volunteer at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Franklin, N.C. He was active in the men’s club prison outreach program and helped coordinate parish maintenance. George spent the early morning hours with his Bible in what everyone affectionately referred to as the “Prayer Chair.”
George’s great passion in life was hiking the Appalachian Trail, and he volunteered on a team to maintain a portion of it. Whether enjoying the peace of the woods alone or sharing its beauty with others, George’s love of the Trail was certainly a trademark.

George is survived by his wife of 57 years, Jacqueline; his children Dan Gover and wife Nancy, Dave Gover, Kathy Hutson and husband Ralph, and Mitch Gover and wife Kathy; grandchildren Danny, Ryan, Tyler, Ashton, Courtney, Megan, Lauren and Michael; and great-grandson Noah.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, May 17th at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. Father Tien Duong will officiate. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Food for the Poor, 6401 Lyons Road
