Obituary for Addie Virginia Bell (Hamilton)

Addie Virginia  Bell (Hamilton)
Addie H. Bell, age 89, beloved mother of eight, grandmother of 19, and great-grandmother of 4, died in Franklin, NC on August 12, 2014. Her great loves were people (especially feeding them), her pets, gardening, and art (quilting, painting, and woodwork). She graduated from high school in Gainesville, FL in 1941 and was the first woman to receive a Bachelor of Science in Animal Husbandry from the University of Florida in 1945. She went on to receive a Master’s degree in Microbiology from UF in 1947 and moved to Pensacola, FL to supervise the local Department of Health. There she met Dr. Alan Eddy Bell, raised her family, and was an active member of Christ Church Parish. In later years she lived in Franklin, NC where she was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church and a member of Helen Lambert’s art family.
She was preceded in death by her parents Henry Glenn Hamilton and Mildred MacArthur Hamilton, as well as by her brother Harry Glenn Hamilton. She is survived by her sister Maguerite Hamilton Preston of Gainesville. FL and her children Laurie Bell of Asheville, NC; Sandra Gladden of Franklin, NC; Eddy Bell; Peter Bell of Charlotte, NC; Barbie Andrews of Perrysburg, OH; Henry Bell of Marysville, TN; Milt Bell of Lanesville, IN; and M. Elizabeth Bell of Ithaca, NY. She is remembered for her love of life, kindness, and integrity in the hearts of all who knew her.
A memorial service will be held at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Franklin, NC on Friday, August 15th at 1:00 .
In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial gifts be directed to St. John’s Episcopal Church.
