Obituary for John Laurence Ervin

John Laurence Ervin
John Laurence Ervin of Franklin, NC, formerly of Newton, NC and Morganton, NC, died at the age of 95 Tuesday, June 12 at Angel Medical Center in Franklin after a short illness. Up until the time of his illness, he was living on his own, walking down to sit by the Little Tennessee River, reading good books, and enjoying his family and life. His family was the most important thing to him.

He was born on July 1, 1922 in Hickory to Lois Frye Ervin and Delmar W. Ervin. He was preceded in death by his brother Bill. His brother Gordon lives in Brunswick, GA. They grew up in rural NC during the depression but had a good time in the woods, fields, and farms of Catawba County. In 1941, he married the love of his life, Elizabeth Barringer, and they had 60 happy years together. He is survived by his daughters Susan Ervin (husband Bill McLarney) and Sandra Ervin (Cliff Williams), and by his beloved grand-daughters Rose McLarney (husband Justin Gardiner) and Lily Polanski (Tim Koerber).

He served with honor in World War II as a navigator and 2nd Lieutenant in the Eighth Air Force. He flew 25 bombing missions over Germany.

A self-made man who worked very hard for his family, his career was in the construction business. He was very proud of the churches, schools, banks, etc. he built, but most important to him was the unique mid-century modern home he designed and built for his family in 1954, on Golf Course Rd. in Morganton. He lived there until 2012, when he moved to Franklin full time.

A small graveside service will be held at Friendship United Methodist Church in Newton, NC Tuesday, June 19 at 1:00 pm.

Memorial donations may be made to Mainspring Conservation Trust, P.O. Box 1148, Franklin, NC 28744.

Macon Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
