Obituary for Donna Marie Bishop (Harris)

Donna Marie Bishop, formerly of Waterville, Maine and Owings Mills, Maryland, died Saturday, December 30, 2017 at her home in Otto, North Carolina.

Born in San Antonio, TX, she was the daughter of James Sr. and Rita Harris. Donna graduated from Franklin Senior High School and attended Catonsville Community College. She was a life-long artist. Donna employed her talent of caring for others as a nursing assistant. Later in life, she followed her love of nature to become an interpretive ranger at Black Rock Mountain State Park in Georgia, near the home she made for herself in the mountains of western North Carolina.

Those who love her will remember Donna as a wild woman. She preferred the setting of Mother Nature to cities of people, and cared deeply for those in need. She was a kind animal lover, and always had a flock of creatures to care for and love. She gave even when she had nothing to give and because of this she often struggled, trying to find balance between a life of freedom in nature and the demands of the modern world. Her spirit will be felt from the mountaintops she climbed to the valley streams in which she played and every wild place between.

Left to celebrate her memory is her mother, Rita Harris of Owings Mills, MD; three children, Jeremiah Bishop and wife Erin of Harrisonburg, VA, Angela Bishop and Elija Bishop both of St. Petersburg, FL; grandchildren, Corrielle Rosenthal and Conrad and Beatrix Bishop; two brothers, James Harris Jr. of Ellicott City, MD and Thomas Harris of Deltona, FL and niece, Tess Harris of Ellicott City, MD.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Macon County Animal Shelter, 1377 Lakeside Drive, Franklin, NC 28734.

The family will receive friends at a visitation on Saturday, January 6, from 1 – 3 p.m. at the Irvine Nature Center Fern Room. Following visitation, Pastor Paul Papp will lead a memorial service there at 3 p.m. Guests are invited to explore the center’s walking trails, enjoying the sights and sounds of nature that Donna so greatly loved.

Macon Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
