Obituary for Robert Childers
ROBERT BRUCE CHILDERS, age 77, of Farmington, New Mexico, left this world to be with his Father in Heaven, Thursday, July 6, 2017. He was a native of Franklin, NC, having been born September 7, 1939, to parents Herman and Josephine Snyder Childers.
After graduating from Franklin High School in 1957, Bruce drove dump trucks and logging trucks in the mountains of North Carolina, and worked with the construction of the Cherokee side of the Blue Ridge Parkway. He later reminisced about the intriguing dangers of these adventures and of the several near-accidents he encountered while doing this work.
After seeking a safer occupation, he became an aircraft mechanic and electrician, travelling throughout the country working on military aircraft as a civilian, for over 10 years.
He then went into the building construction business with his father-in-law, working in Albuquerque and Farmington, New Mexico. After several years, Bruce went into the building business on his own, and in 1976, established Childers Builders in Farmington. Since that time, Bruce and his family and employees have built some of the finest custom homes, churches, and professional buildings in Farmington and the surrounding area. He was well-known for building fine dentist’s offices in Farmington as well as in Santa Fe and Albuquerque. Bruce always turned out quality products with his hard work, dedication to the job, and commitment to getting the job done right.
In addition to his career as a quality builder, Bruce’s recent passion was serving as an advocate for clean and safe water for fellow members of his community. He formed the “Crouch-Mesa Ratepayer’s Association” and continued to work for this worthy cause for as long as he lived.
Bruce was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, husband, brother, uncle, and son; he was a friend to all wherever he lived. He will be missed by many people whose lives he touched.
In addition to his parents, Bruce was predeceased by a sister, Mildred Childers Cunningham. He is survived by a son, Robert Derrick (Jayme) Childers, and a daughter, Debby Childers (Tom) McCall, both of Farmington, NM; grandchildren, Rachel (Ben) Banks, Jacob Childers, David Childers, Danielle Hastings, and Megan (Kevin) Rants; great grandchildren, Keisha, Cooper, Morgan, Sydney, Charlie, Krista, Emily, and Addilynn. He is also survived by 3 sisters, Barbara C. Simmons of Cypress, TX, Patricia C. Safko and Kathryn C. Teem, both of Franklin, NC;
2 brothers, Carroll Childers of Atlanta, GA, and David Childers of Lake City, FL; and many nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life for Bruce was held Saturday, July 15, 2017, at the First Baptist Church in Farmington, NM, where he was an active and dedicated member.
A Celebration of Life Memorial was held in Franklin, NC, from 1-4:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 14, 2017, at the Town of Franklin Memorial Park.
In loving memory of Bruce, we express gratitude for his presence in our lives, and for his examples of dedication, honesty, humor, a sense of adventure, persistence, generosity, and unconditional love for his family and for his fellowmen.
