Obituary for Mary Slagle Roylston

Mary Slagle Roylston
Mary Slagle Roylston, 84, of Franklin, NC and most recently, Simpsonville, SC, passed away Tuesday, March 7, 2017.

Born in Macon Co, she was the daughter of the late Fred Moore Slagle and Lida Alexander Slagle. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Stephen Roylston and sisters Betty Kemper and Margaret Bulgin.

Her life was filled with meaningful friendships - through community, church, work, her sons and grandchildren and their friends, and in-laws (new and old). When you met Mary you made a friend - for life.

After high school (a long time ago) she moved to Minot, ND attending Minot Teachers College and helping her sister Betty with each of her children. Atlanta was her next home where she met Stephen T. Roylston. Married in Franklin in 1960, they lived in Jackson MS, Seattle WA (where her sons were born), Denver CO, Costa Mesa CA, Franklin NC, San Diego CA, Lancaster CA, finally retiring back home to Franklin in 1994. After Steve's passing in 1998 she moved to Simpsonville SC.

Mary loved Zinnias, enjoyed reading, and especially entertaining in her home. She was always busy serving and helping others, meeting friends for lunch, delivering meals on wheels, baking, following friends on Facebook, sending cards, letters and gifts across the country to countless friends. We offer our condolences to all who missed out on her cooking. Her kitchen was her kingdom and she it's Queen.

Her faith in Christ guided her, giving her peace through the ups and downs of life and leading her to her home in heaven.

She is survived by her brother Fred and Ruth Slagle of Franklin, NC, her sons Charles and Giovanna Roylston of Raleigh, NC, Tom and Olivia Roylston of Greenville, SC and her nine grandchildren who affectionately knew her as "GranMary" - Bradley, Jack, Mary, Jennie, Vicki, Robert, Stephen, Lauren and Dillon.

A service celebrating her life will be held at Simpsonville United Methodist Church, 215 SE Main St., Simpsonville, SC on March 20, 2017. Her family will be available to greet friends from 9:30-10:30 followed by a memorial service in the main church sanctuary from 10:30 - 11:30. Afterward we will gather in the fellowship hall for light refreshments and laughter in honor of Mary Roylston. Please join us.
