Obituary for Dorothy Seagle (Corbin)

Dorothy Seagle (Corbin)
Surely the sun shone a little brighter on Friday, October 29, 1926, when Dewey and Minnie Williams Corbin welcomed the first of their five children. Dorothy Ann was born in the house built by her great grandfather, John Corbin on land purchased in December of 1836. As low as the markets crashed, spirits in the Corbin house were soaring in the other direction!

Joining the family in the coming years were brothers, C.D. and Grady and sisters, Lattie Mae and Mildred.

The family thrived through the years. Even though “Poppy” was away working many jobs to support the family financially, “Mama” had lots of help with the garden, preserving whatever foods were available. All of the children assisted and looked forward to their father’s return who always had treats for everyone.

On August 4, 1945, Dorothy was married to the love of her life, Donald Seagle, whom she had met when he was visiting an aunt who lived nearby the Corbin home. Most likely they met when she was walking to church or to sell blackberries. A new home was built on Rabbit Creek in 1954 and there were three children born, Brenda was the first followed by Donnie then Karen.

In 1972 the home was sold, the farm purchased and a new home built. Dorothy quickly made the home a collection of picture, mementoes’, and collections of whatever she fancied. Two of her favorites were her collection of red birds and thimbles.

Grandchildren began arriving with Sherri, Todd, Rodney, Lori and Kara following. As they grew so too did the collection of newspaper articles and memorabilia. As the grandchildren married there came great grandkids, Kendyll, Jaiden, Jesse, Ryan, Charley, Micah, Tatem, Elin and Jase. The collection grew and the home became the “go to” place for family and friends.

Dorothy’s family has always been known for service to the community perhaps beginning with her mother’s parents donating land for the Holly Springs Baptist church around 1914. This service continued through involvement with her church and community. She served as church Clerk for 20 years with the church observing “Dorothy’s Day” in September 2004.

Her service continued with her involvement in the community club beginning with its inception in the early 1950”s and being awarded the Woman of the year.

While home life was busy, Dorothy worked as a seamstress for Angie Deal and kept Joy and Gene until school age for sister, Mildred. She then began her career as a teacher’s assistant in the county school system. This was the job she gloried in and loved all the children as her own. Many of those are now adults and remember her like she was their mom!

In December of 2016, having been married to her soul mate for over 71 years, a series of medical problems arose. As hard as she could fight and even with the love and caring from her husband and family, Dorothy succumbed to her tired and weary body on January 14, 2017.

Awaiting her in heaven are her parents, brothers, C.D. Corbin (Lorraine), Grady Corbin (Wilma) and sister, Mildred and brother-in-law, Jim Williamson.

Left behind to rejoin with her are her husband, Donald; daughter, Brenda, son, Donnie (Nancy) and daughter, Karen (Ronnie Vanhook) and sister, Lattie Mae (Jack Keeter). Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Grand and great grandchildren will be able to revel in her lengthy legacy and her family’s history in the Corbin Cove.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, January 18, at Macon Funeral Home.

Funeral Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, January 19, at Holly Springs Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Rev. Donnie Seagle, Rev. Brandon Breedlove, Rev.Jack Hollowell and Rev. Judson Hall will officiate.

Pallbearers will be Todd Seagle, Rodney Vanhook, Jesse Seagle, Ronnie Vanhook, David Green, David Hollowell, Gene Williamson, Randy Keeter, Larry Corbin and Keith Corbin.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Dorothy’s memory to the Holly Springs Church Cemetery, 366 Holly Springs Church Road, Franklin, NC 28734.

Macon Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
