Obituary for The Rev. Deacon Alice Joan Mason

The Rev. Deacon Alice Joan  Mason
The Rev. Deacon Alice J. Mason passed from this life on Thursday, Dec. 22, 2016 after a four year battle with Amytropic Lateral Sclerosis (Lou Gehrig’s Disease). She was the daughter of the late Albert Mason and Edna Carey Mason. She was born in Grand Rapids, MI on August 5, 1934 and moved to NC in 1977. A grandson, Jacob Magnuson predeceased her as did her former husband, Arnold N. Magnuson, Jr.

Alice was ordained a deacon in the Episcopal Church In 1984 and served the Episcopal Diocese of Western North Carolina until her death. She has served at St. David’s Episcopal Church in Cullowhee, NC as a deacon since 1992. Alice was co-founder of Clean Slate, a program that provides support for women recently released from prison. She also served as a chaplain for female inmates at the Jackson County Correctional Facility, and was also a chaplain for Harris Regional Hospital, Cherokee Hospital, and Memorial Mission Hospital.

Alice was a member of the Board of Directors of Region A Partnership For Children and the Jackson County Transit Authority. She was a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow.

She is survived by her children: Laura Lenihan (Thomas) of Taylor, MI; Elizabeth Mason of Lake Lure, NC; Arnold Magnuson III of Norfolk, VA and Erik Magnuson (Sabrina) of Orlando, Fl. She is also survived by her life partner, Nancie Wilson of Sylva, NC and her two “fur babies,” Jessie and Graycee of the home. Also surviving are her grandchildren: Matthew Lenihan of Lexington, KY, Karrie Magnuson of Mobile, AL; Colleen Kincaid (Josh) of Taylor, MI, James Vance (Hannah) of Black Mountain, NC, Caitlin Vance of Asheville, NC, Nathaniel Magnuson of Orlando, FL and Joshua Magnuson of Orlando, Fl; great-grandchildren Conner and Kadie Kincaid of Taylor, MI, and Olivia Vance of Black Mountain, NC. Also surviving is her sister, Shirley Wells (Leonard), of Grand Haven, MI

A memorial service will be held at St. David’s Episcopal Church in Cullowhee, NC, on Saturday, January 14, 2017 at 2 p.m. The Rt. Rev. Jose’ McGloughlin, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Western NC will officiate. Interment will be in the St. David’s Cemetery.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be given to the Clean Slate Program, P.O. Box 455, Webster, NC 28788 in Alice’s memory.
