Obituary for Ronald "Ronnie" Lowell Ledford

Ronald "Ronnie" Lowell Ledford
Ronald Lowell Ledford, 67, of Franklin, died Thursday, September 22, 2016 at his home, surrounded by his family.

Born in Macon County on May 31, 1949, he was the son of Gordon Ledford and the late Ella May Seay Ledford who passed away in 2002. Ronnie attended Franklin High School where he was a basketball star and legend, still holding the record for the most points scored in a single game. He continued his basketball career at Piedmont College and began his coaching career at Franklin High School in 1972. Known as “Coach Ledford” he taught young people the skills, and importance of sportsmanship and character in the game of basketball.

He was a physical education teacher at Franklin High School and Macon Middle School where he was a fellow jokester among many loving co-workers.

After his retirement from teaching, he was employed by Metrolina Greenhouses and enjoyed many years serving the Lowe’s stores of Western North Carolina as a Plant Partner vendor.

He was a loving son, husband, father and “Pappy”. He was a steadfast and loyal caretaker, along with his brother, Clinton, for his 97 year old father and a constant source of encouragement and support for his daughters.

Affectionately known as “Ledford”, he loved dancing, pontoon boating, camping with family and friends, canning tomato juice, and Tarheel basketball. He will be greatly missed and long remembered for his sense of humor and love of life.

In addition to his father, Gordon Ledford, he is survived by his wife of 22 years, Susie Perry Ledford; daughters, Breanna Ledford Pratt and husband Greg and Casey Ann Ledford both of Asheville, NC; two brothers, Clinton Ledford of Franklin and Phil Ledford of Sunset Beach, NC; two granddaughters, Farrah Mae and Starlynn Ruth Pratt; special sister-in-law, Beth Nicholson; two nieces, Alice Ledford and Tiffany Hummel and two nephews, Adam and Andrew Nicholson.

Memorial Service will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, September 25, at First United Methodist Church. Rev. David Beam, Rev. Margaret Freeman and Rev. Janet Greene will officiate.

The family will receive friends from 2:00-4:00 p.m. Sunday, at First United Methodist Church.

Memorial donations may be made to Macon County Girls or Boys Basketball League, C/O Entegra Bank, 14 One Center Court, Franklin, NC 28734.
