Elizabeth “Betty” Howard Huffman, 78, of Franklin, passed away Sunday, April 19, 2015.

Born in Macon Co, she was the daughter of the late Lawrence Carl Howard Sr. and Beatrice Crunkleton Howard. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John L. Huffman who died in 2012; sister, Martha Craig and brother, Lawrence Carl “LC” Howard. Betty graduated from Franklin High School in 1955 and attended Brenau College in 1955-56. She received a B.S. in Home Economics from Western Carolina University in 1960and Marketing Certification from Appalachian State University in 1982. Betty also attended Ohio State from 1990-1994 for Curriculum Development. She began her teaching career at Clayton Elementary School in Clayton, GA. She then taught at Franklin High School from 1964-1968. After teaching at several schools in Fayetteville, NC, she completed her teaching career at Franklin High School from 1981-1996. She served as organist and chairperson of Worship, Education, and Fellowship Committees at Mulberry United Methodist Church. Betty was a past president of Macon County Public Library’s Friends of the Library. She also served on Angel Community Hospital’s Community Relations Board and Foundation Board. She was active in the Democrat Party, having served as a Precinct Chairperson and Election Day Chief Judge. After her retirement, Betty’s passion for education continued. She was an active member of Macon County Retired School Personnel. She served as President of this organization as well as holding various other titles. She set an example by volunteering countless hours at Union Academy where she decorated bulletin boards, assisted students, and proctored testing. Betty also was active in the North Carolina Retired School Personnel. Through her involvement in this group, she was an advocate for retired educators giving back to public schools. She established a Gold Star program that recognizes retired school personnel groups who excel at volunteering.

She is survived by her daughter, Amy Westmoreland and husband “Westy” of Mt. Pleasant, SC; two sisters, Mary Lee Howard of Hiawassee, GA and Nancy Owen and husband Gurlie of Brevard, NC and three grandchildren, Anna, Jay and John Westmoreland; brother-in law, Jack Craig of Otto; sister-in law, Margaret Howard and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, April 25th at First United Methodist Church. The Reverends Janet Greene, Vic Green and Laura Whitt will officiate. Private burial will be held in Mulberry United Methodist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to one’s favorite charity.
