Mary Elizabeth Simpson (Franklin)
Obituary for Mary Elizabeth Franklin Simpson:
Our beloved Mother, Mary Elizabeth Franklin Simpson passed away peacefully on July 26, 2014, at the Fedelia Eckerd Living Center in Highlands, North Carolina. She was born in Murphy, North Carolina on April 29, 1924, to James Walter Franklin and Jessie Howell Franklin.
Her life was spent in devotion to her husband, W.D. Simpson (Doug), for sixty five years. Together they found personal joy in their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, while serving the community through their business for nearly forty years. As parents, they strongly professed a life filled with blessings surrounded by the wonderful people of Macon County.
Mother’s personal passions were her dogs and cats, lying on a warm beach, swinging in her yard swing and demonstrating her skills as a true southern cook. Additionally, she shared a love for music with her husband, particularly the music of Tony Bennett and they would often dance to their favorite tune, “I Left My Heart in San Francisco”. This brought smiles to their faces for years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Virginia Franklin Fulmer, husband Doug Simpson, son James Walter Simpson and granddaughter, Marianna Elizabeth Lane Ray.
She is survived by three children: Robert Lee Simpson (Bob) and wife Margaret of Franklin, N.C., William David Simpson of Franklin, N.C., and Mary Elizabeth Simpson Ray and husband Ron of Snellville, GA.
She is survived by ten grandchildren: Mike Simpson and wife Michelle of Fletcher, N.C., Marian Simpson and husband Johan De Jong of Suwanee, GA., Stephanie Simpson, Lindsay Simpson, Drew Simpson, and Jason Simpson of Franklin, N.C., Caroline Simpson of Atlanta, GA., Alexandra Simpson of Charlotte, N.C., Jeff Simpson of Athens, GA., Merideth Ray and husband Dr. Eric Schumacher of Decatur, GA.
Additionally, she was richly blessed with great grandchildren in her life: Bryce Simpson and Micah Simpson of Fetcher, N.C., Amber Wright of Franklin, N.C., Marianna Rose Schumacher and Caitlin Masako Schumacher of Decatur, GA.
Our Mother’s life cannot pass without the family giving sincere affirmation and gratitude to those of you that have graced her life by providing personal healthcare throughout her final years. To the staff of Mountain Trace Nursing Center, and most recently, the Fedelia Eckerd Living Center of Highlands and Four Seasons Hospice, thank you for giving her love and kindness while comforting her needs and allowing her have as much dignity as possible.
The family offers deepest respect and appreciation to Dr. Margaret A. Noel, MD., Founder and Director Emerita of Memory Care in Asheville, N.C. It was through Dr. Noel’s knowledge, compassion, devotion and medical intervention that Mom’s personal journey with Dementia/Alzheimer’s was carefully guided. Many acts of kindness and best practices in areas of need were invaluable to Mother’s care.
We cannot mourn her passing without celebrating the colorful, spirited, unique and splendid life she lived. She was indeed, one of a kind!
Out of respect for Mother’s wishes, a private service of remembrance will be held for the family. Reverend Nancy Childress will officiate.
Macon Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
